大陸媒體呼籲官方，應當接好菲律賓伸出的橄欖枝，抓住杜特蒂執政帶來的戰略機遇，並建議北京不妨在放鬆菲漁民去黃岩島海域捕魚方面採取靈活態度，因應中菲關係出現的嶄新局面。
中共中央機關報《人民日報》旗下《環球時報》18日以〈中國應當接好杜特蒂伸出的橄欖枝〉為題發表社評稱，中菲昔日在南海尖銳對立，且菲國作為美國亞太再平衡的支撐點，這次訪問在3個月前完全不可想像；但杜特蒂的舉措，對中菲關係以及地區戰略轉折展現全新姿態。杜特蒂取代前任總統艾奎諾三世，改變了南海對立情勢，並讓美國「亞太再平衡」戰略在南海區域被釜底抽薪，大陸方面應妥善接受他，主動遞出橄欖枝。
社評並一轉平日代表大陸民族主義的立場，強調「黃岩島海域被捕走幾隻石斑魚，但兩國關係將出現嶄新局面。我們這樣建議，不是主張讓步，而是認為中國作為泱泱大國應在這個時候向菲律賓漁民和他們選出的總統表達善意。」
社評強調，美國的亞太再平衡戰略導致中國在東南亞外交和經濟活動成本全面增加，如今菲律賓有不想再為美國這一戰略效力的清晰表達，「我們有必要對此給予鼓勵。走向全球舞台的中國需要有這樣的胸懷和氣度。」
社評最後指出，做中國的朋友，以朋友的態度和方式解決同中國的糾紛，比像艾奎諾三世那樣聯美抗華更符合國家利益，中國應當做得讓周邊國家、包括世界都看清楚這一點。那樣的話，中國就會在世界上更有威望，也更受歡迎。
